Knot magic has been used for ages. It has been used my the Egyptians and has been associated with witches since the middle ages. They can be ritually tied to bind a person or event, or they can be untied to release power. A knot can be tied to prevent pregnancy or to join individuals together.
In ancient Egypt, Isis possess the "Tat", a magical knot known as the "Knot of Isis." Egyptian robes would be tied with this knot, by tying the ends of material together, as a symbolic representation of the female reproductive organs. Thus, it was often worn as a talisman for fertility, good health, and good luck.
According to folklore, tying a knot in a piece of red thread would stop a nosebleed. Untying knots during a difficult childbirth is supposed to help ease the difficulty. An and gypsy belief says that, if you tie seven knots in a red scarf it will help keep a marriage together.
